Forget the fact that most companies plan in spreadsheets.
The real issue is that most companies do not take advantage of driver-based
planning. According to one report, 94% of companies have not yet deployed
driver-based planning. The software pundits will say we need to get out of
spreadsheets to streamline planning and reduce errors. As a management
consultant, I put on my nice suit and billed out $500/Hr to look at corporate
culture and put in new incentive systems or relative benchmarking programs to
align management. Ironically, we set up business performance management systems
in Excel and Access. It was not about the tool per se. As a software vendor, I
am supposed to tell you it’s all about the tool and by the way, that corporate
culture thing is also important, but really, you should buy the software so my
boss will be happy.
Well, what if every finance department in America had
specialized driver-based models that made the difference. Would that fix the
economy?
